The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has stated that corps members deployed to Lagos State provide services worth over ₦14 billion annually.1 The DG made the announcement during a courtesy visit to the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, at the Government House in Marina.2
The figure, which represents the minimum monetary value of the services rendered, is a testament to the significant contributions of the more than 44,000 corps members serving in the state across various sectors.3 The DG highlighted that this personnel includes a substantial number of professionals, such as 333 medical doctors, 306 pharmacists, 274 nurses, and 7,188 teachers, who fill critical service gaps within the state.4
During the visit, Nafiu acknowledged the Lagos State government’s ongoing support for the NYSC scheme.5 He specifically commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for the renovation work at the temporary Iyana-Ipaja camp and the ongoing construction of a permanent 10,000-capacity orientation camp.6 The DG expressed hope for the swift completion of the new facility, which would allow all corps members deployed to Lagos to be accommodated in a single location, rather than having to be dislodged to camps in neighboring states.7
The DG also noted that Lagos remains the top choice for corps members due to its relative security and the comfort it provides to their parents.8 He requested the governor’s continued support for the scheme, including the provision of an ambulance for the NYSC secretariat in the state.9
