On Wednesday, October 1, 2025, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Jigawa confirmed the death of a 15-year-old boy who drowned in a pond.

The deceased, identified as Sunusi Abubakar, was a resident of Gabari village in the Garki Local Government Area. His father, Abubakar Gabari, reported that the teenager had gone to swim in a pond known as “Mahayin gidan Toro” around 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 30, and never returned home.

A search team, made up of community members and security agencies, was immediately mobilized. The search began after Abubakar’s shoes and trousers were spotted abandoned on the riverbank. His body was eventually recovered from the pond on Wednesday morning.

According to a statement by NSCDC spokesperson ASC Badaruddeen Tijjani, the body showed no signs of injury and was handed over to the family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites. The NSCDC has since appealed to parents and community leaders to warn children and youths against unsafe swimming practices, especially in open water bodies, to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
