Tylenol is a brand name for the over-the-counter pain reliever and fever reducer acetaminophen (also known as paracetamol).1 It is widely used to treat minor aches, pains, headaches, and fevers.2

President Donald Trump recently warned pregnant women against using Tylenol, claiming it is linked to an increased risk of autism in children.3 This statement was met with strong criticism from major medical organizations like the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, who called his remarks “irresponsible.”4

The link between Tylenol and autism is a subject of ongoing debate and research.5

  • Studies Suggesting a Link: Some studies have found an association between prenatal acetaminophen use and a higher risk of neurodevelopmental disorders like autism and ADHD.6 However, these studies often face a key challenge known as “confounding factors,” which means that other variables—such as the underlying reasons a pregnant woman took the medication in the first place—could be the real cause of the developmental issues.7
  • Studies Showing No Link: Other large-scale studies, including one involving 2.48 million children in Sweden, found no definitive link between Tylenol use and autism when comparing siblings who were exposed to the drug to those who weren’t.8 These studies suggest that the observed association may be due to other factors rather than a direct cause-and-effect relationship.9

Currently, major medical groups and health experts continue to recommend acetaminophen as the safest choice for pain relief and fever reduction during pregnancy, emphasizing that high fevers and untreated pain can pose their own risks to both the mother and the fetus.10 They advise that pregnant women should not stop taking any medication without consulting their doctor first.11
