Lagos NURTW official arrested for beating dispatch rider to death

A member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Lagos State, identified as Shamsideen Adio, has been arrested for allegedly beating a dispatch rider to death. The incident, which took place on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, on Tapa Street, Lagos Island, reportedly began as a scuffle over a minor traffic incident.

According to reports, the dispatch rider had allegedly scratched Adio’s vehicle. The situation escalated when Adio, joined by his colleagues, allegedly attacked the dispatch rider, beating him severely. A journalist and social media user, Chris Nwandu, shared a video of the incident, stating that the victim later died from the injuries sustained during the beating.

A police source confirmed that the victim succumbed to his injuries and that the suspect has been taken into custody. Adio is currently at the State Criminal Investigation Department. The Lagos State Police Command has yet to release an official statement on the matter.
