The Lagos State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into a viral video showing students of Excel College, Ejigbo, allegedly smoking and drinking in the school’s boys’ hostel. The video, which reportedly captured an incident from April 2025, recently surfaced online, sparking widespread outrage and condemnation from the public.

Following the public outcry, the Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to take over the case. The police have already invited the school’s principal, who also serves as the proprietor, for questioning.

According to a statement from the police spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, the principal stated that the students seen in the video had already graduated from the institution. However, the school management is cooperating with the ongoing investigation to determine the full circumstances of the incident and to prevent a recurrence of such behavior.

This incident has also drawn a swift response from the Lagos State Government. The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, stated that the government views the matter with the “utmost seriousness” and has commenced a thorough investigation through its Office of Education Quality Assurance. He emphasized that any school found culpable would face appropriate sanctions in line with the state’s educational policies.

The authorities are using this opportunity to urge all secondary school authorities, parents, and guardians to be more proactive in supervising and guiding their children and wards. They stressed the importance of instilling good behavior and moral values to prevent such misconduct. The police have assured the public that the outcome of the investigation will be made public.
