Tragedy struck in Anambra State as a trailer crushed a tricycle, killing three people. The accident, which occurred on the Onitsha-Owerri Road by the Mgbemena road junction, has been attributed to the poor state of the road and a container that fell from the truck.
According to a report from Vanguard, the incident happened around 7:30 a.m. at a spot that has been a source of concern for road users. Eyewitnesses said the trailer, which was laden with a container, was maneuvering around an impassable section of the road when the container shifted, fell, and crushed a tricycle, with three passengers on board.
The victims, including a former manager of a filling station who had recently become a tricycle operator, were killed instantly. Other tricycles were also trapped under the container, and as of the time of the report, a rescue operation had not yet started.
The incident sparked anger among sympathizers and tricycle operators, who made bonfires and chanted anti-government songs, accusing the state government of neglecting the road for over four months despite repeated complaints from residents and radio stations. Following the accident, tricycle operators in the area withdrew their services to protest the poor road conditions and demand the rescue of the trapped victims.
