The Nigerian Army has launched a disciplinary action against a soldier involved in the death of a commercial bus driver in Ondo State.1 The incident, which occurred on Sunday, October 13, 2025, near a military checkpoint in Akunu, Akoko North East Local Government Area, has been described by the Army as an act of “unprofessional conduct” that is “regrettable and unacceptable.”2

According to a statement from Major Njoka Irabor, the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 32 Artillery Brigade, the incident began when the bus driver, identified as Yakubu Joshua, had a mechanical issue with his vehicle.3 Frustrated passengers demanded a refund of their fares, and one of them reportedly sought the help of a soldier at the checkpoint.4 An altercation ensued between the soldier and the driver, leading to a physical confrontation that resulted in the driver’s death.5 Sources also indicated that the soldier allegedly struck the driver on the head with an AK-47 rifle.

The Army has stated that it immediately took responsibility for the injured driver, evacuating him to a nearby medical facility and covering his expenses.6 However, the driver was later confirmed dead at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, on Monday, October 14, 2025.7

In response to the tragedy, the Nigerian Army has promised a “speedy dispensation of disciplinary action” against the soldier.8 They have assured the public that the soldier “will face the full wrath of the law, and the outcome of the disciplinary proceedings will be made public.”9 The 32 Artillery Brigade has also extended its condolences to the deceased’s family and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Ondo State, pledging to cover burial expenses and ensure the welfare and education of the driver’s children.10 The Ondo State Government has reportedly commended the Army’s swift response.11
