The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Kano State has received a significant number of human rights complaints.1 According to the state coordinator, Shehu Abdullahi, the commission received 158 complaints on alleged human rights abuses in January 2024.2

Of these complaints, 121 were attended to, and 37 were pending.3 The breakdown of the cases included:

  • 23 cases on women’s rights abuses.4
  • 28 cases on abandonment of family responsibilities, sexual, and domestic violence.5
  • 107 cases on child labor, unlawful arrests, detention, and torture.6

The NHRC also mediated in some marital and family issues.7 The commission urges residents to use its services to resolve disputes before they escalate.

It is worth noting that while a report mentioned 158 complaints for January 2024, there are other reports that track a much larger number of complaints across the country over a different time period. For example, the NHRC received over 1.4 million complaints in the first half of 2025 across all of Nigeria.8
