From €120m to €75m: Osimhen’s market value slides – Report

Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen’s market value has dropped from a peak of around €120 million during his time at Napoli to a current valuation of €75 million, according to data from football statistics sites like Transfermarkt.

The significant slide is attributed to a combination of factors related to his recent career developments:

Reasons for the Market Value Decline

  1. Transfer to a Less Competitive League: Osimhen’s permanent transfer (following an initial loan) from Napoli in Italy’s Serie A (a “Top 5” European league) to Galatasaray in the Turkish Süper Lig led to an automatic devaluation. Market valuations typically adjust downward when a player moves from a top-tier league to one considered less competitive.
  2. Agreed-Upon Transfer Fee/Release Clause: The €75 million figure aligns with the transfer fee agreed upon in the deal between Napoli and Galatasaray, and importantly, matches the value of the release clause included in his contract. This figure then became the benchmark for his new market valuation.
  3. Injury and Inconsistency at Napoli: His final season with Napoli (2023/2024) was noted as being “injury-ravaged” and inconsistent compared to his Scudetto-winning form in the 2022/2023 season, where his value peaked. A dip in performance and increased missed playing time typically result in a valuation reduction.
  4. Failed Top-Club Move: The protracted transfer saga of 2024, where expected moves to top clubs like Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) collapsed after they were unable to meet Napoli’s high demand of around €130 million, also contributed to the market correction.

Despite the drop from his all-time peak, the €75 million valuation still makes Victor Osimhen the most valuable Nigerian player and one of the most valuable footballers in Africa.
