The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has officially denied any involvement in the planned nationwide protest demanding the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

The denial comes after claims circulated on social media, suggesting that the student body would join the #FreeNnamdiKanu Protest being organized by activist Omoyele Sowore and his associates for October 20.

Key Points from NANS’s Statement:

  • Denial of Affiliation: The President of NANS, Olushola Oladoja, addressing a press conference in Ibadan, firmly described the social media claims as “false, mischievous, and politically motivated.” He stressed that NANS has no affiliation with Sowore or any politically driven group regarding the protest.
  • Focus on Education and Dialogue: Oladoja insisted that the students’ union remains focused on its core mandate of education, youth development, and national unity. He affirmed the association’s commitment to pursuing peaceful advocacy and constructive engagement to advance the welfare of Nigerian students.
  • Judicial Matter: NANS stated that the issue of Nnamdi Kanu’s detention is currently before a competent court of law. Therefore, it would be “unlawful and irresponsible” for the Association to take sides or mobilize students for a protest concerning a judicial matter.
  • Warning to Students and Parents: The NANS President warned parents and guardians to caution their children against being used by what he called “self-serving politicians” who exploit young people for personal gain. He urged the public and security agencies to disregard any publication linking NANS to the planned protest.

The firm denial by NANS underscores the politically sensitive nature of the Nnamdi Kanu matter, as politicians and groups mobilize support for or against the campaign for his release.
