Police Demand Proof from Osun Amotekun Boss After Alleged Assassination Attempt
The Osun State Police Command has asked the Osun State Commander of the Amotekun Corps, Adekunle Omoyele, to provide proof of an alleged assassination attempt on his life. This demand comes after the commander and his corps’ spokesperson, Abass Yusuf, claimed he was ambushed by gunmen in Osogbo.
According to a statement from the Amotekun Corps, Omoyele was attacked at around 10:05 p.m. on a Monday night while driving home. He recounted that armed men in a moving vehicle opened fire on his car, leaving it riddled with bullets. He managed to escape with gunshot injuries and is reportedly receiving treatment at an undisclosed medical facility.
Police Put Investigation on Hold
In a conflicting statement, the Osun Police Command’s spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed that Omoyele had reported the incident. However, he stated that a full investigation has not yet started because the commander has not provided the necessary proof.
“He will have to produce the vehicle and other things to prove the incident before we can talk of an investigation,” Ojelabi said. The police have reportedly visited the scene of the alleged attack but are awaiting evidence from Omoyele.
Broader Context: A Week of Tension
The alleged assassination attempt has happened just one week after a separate incident where Amotekun operatives in the state reportedly shot and killed three residents in Akinlalu Community. That incident led to public outcry and calls for the arrest and prosecution of the operatives involved. This recent demand for proof from the police command adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing security situation and the relationship between the Amotekun Corps and the state police.
