In a recent speech, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Olayemi Cardoso, identified the country’s youth as its most valuable asset.1 Speaking at the inaugural CBN Governor’s Annual Lecture Series, Cardoso emphasized that Nigeria’s next generation—the “emergent cohort of scholars, professionals, and civic actors”—will be instrumental in leading the nation toward an era of stability, innovation, and inclusive growth.2

Cardoso’s remarks highlighted Nigeria’s unique demographic structure, with a median age of 18 and more than half the population under 30.3 He stressed that this demographic is not just a statistical fact but a “prospective human capital” that presents both a significant opportunity and a responsibility for the nation’s leadership.4

The CBN Governor’s lecture, titled “Next Generation Leadership in Monetary Policy and Nation Building,” is part of a broader initiative to deepen public understanding of monetary policy and foster dialogue on national development.5 In his address, Cardoso urged young Nigerians to prepare for leadership by embracing digital innovation, evidence-based decision-making, and active participation in public discourse.6 He emphasized that today’s students would be tomorrow’s policymakers, entrepreneurs, and central bankers, and they must be ready not just to inherit leadership but to transform it.7

This sentiment is consistent with Cardoso’s earlier statements on youth empowerment and the importance of human capital development.8 He has previously urged young Nigerians to “stay and build Nigeria” rather than emigrating, assuring them that ongoing economic reforms are designed to create a prosperous future.9 He has also emphasized the need for collaboration with academic and professional bodies to address the scarcity of skilled professionals and provide mentorship opportunities for young people.10

By framing the youth as Nigeria’s greatest asset, Cardoso is underscoring the CBN’s commitment to creating an economic environment where young people can thrive and contribute to the nation’s progress.11 His message is a call to action for the next generation to play a central role in shaping Nigeria’s economic and social future.
