In anticipation of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has deployed no fewer than 4,500 of its personnel across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to ensure a hitch-free celebration.

The FCT Commandant of the NSCDC, Dr. Olusola Odumosu, issued the directive, emphasizing that the deployment is a proactive measure to safeguard lives, property, and critical national assets and infrastructure before, during, and after the festivities.1 The operation is aimed at creating a secure environment for residents and visitors alike.2

The personnel deployed are drawn from various specialized units of the Corps, including the Female Strike Force, Arms Squad, Operation Adakasu, the Critical National Assets and Infrastructure (CNAI) Unit, and the Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosives (CBRNE) Department.3 These operatives have been strategically stationed in vulnerable and high-traffic areas, which include:

  • Shopping malls4
  • Recreational centers and amusement parks5
  • Markets and motor parks6
  • Prayer grounds7
  • The Three Arms Zone8
  • Key government buildings9

In addition to the visible presence of uniformed officers, the NSCDC has also deployed undercover operatives for surveillance to proactively forestall any security breaches.10 Black spots and uncompleted buildings, which are often used as criminal hideouts, are also under close monitoring.11

Dr. Odumosu charged all Area Commanders and Divisional Officers to ensure a visible and effective presence in their jurisdictions, warning that any security lapses would not be tolerated.12 He also urged the public to be security-conscious and to report any suspicious activities to the nearest security agency.13 The NSCDC, he said, is ready to work in synergy with other security agencies to ensure a peaceful celebration for all residents.
